Born in London, England, Dominic Howell is a North Vancouver based artist with a studio in West Vancouver and is a painter who enjoys working in oils on a variety of different subject matters and themes.
After training at a London art school in 1960 - 1963, Dominic worked in variety of positions which included time spent with an interior design company in London as well as working for a wine merchant in Bordeaux, France. Returning to England in the 1970s, Dominic settled into English country life, and established his own painting and decorating business which did well for a number of years. During this time he discovered sailing and after some rigorous ocean training bought his own boat and went off to sail around the world. This lasted for five years. Dominic’s last ocean voyage was a solo trip across the Atlantic, setting out from Gambia in West Africa and arriving in Florida, USA. By this time, Dominic had become a proud father to his son Fabian.
Since leaving art school Dominic often practiced drawing and completed several painting commissions over the years but never pursued a full time career in art. In the early 1990’s, living in London again and using his artistic skills and background, he decided to retrain as a computer graphic designer and software illustrator and soon became an independent contractor. It was at this time that he met Bernadette who shared his love of art, his love of the sea and his love of all things nautical! In 1992, they got married in a little church near Notting Gate Hill, London, carrying on with festivities afterwards aboard a barge on the Regents Canal as it made it way through central London.
A few years later, Dominic and his wife decided to move to Dublin, Ireland where Bernadette grew up and it was whilst living there that they adopted two children (brothers) from Romania. In early 2004, together with their two sons Vasile and Elisei, they emigrated to Canada where they are now happily settled and call Vancouver their home. In recent years Dominic’s eldest son Fabian and his wife Julia had two children Ari and Noah, now 10 and 8. In May of 2020 his eldest adopted son Vasile and partner Constance delivered a beautiful baby girl, Valerie and on May 5th 2021 Julia gave birth to another gorgeous baby girl, Roya. Proud Grandparents happily struggling to keep count!
These days, Dominic enjoys painting full time at his studio on the North Shore, Vancouver. Visitors are welcome but must call ahead - 778 688 3385
